offerings for Adult
Spiritual Formation for Fall 2008.
To grow as a disciple of Jesus
Christ, we are to be in community, helping and supporting each other in our
faith journeys. If you are not involved in any of the groups listed, we invite
you to participate. And, if you want to start a small group or Bible study,
please let us know and we will be happy to help in any way we can. May the
Lord bless you as you grow in Christ.
Sunday
School Classes
These
classes meet every Sunday morning.
Journey
Meets
in Room 205, at 9:30 AM.
This group
is studying how to apply the bible to daily living, using the Bible and the
Adult Bible Studies series.

Not So Quiet Class
Meets
in the Quiet Room, at 9:30 AM.
This group
is wrapping up a study of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, and will
begin a new study in October.

Young Adult Class
Meets
in the Library, at 9:30 AM.
This group
is studying “Becoming God’s People,” a series from the United Methodist Church
which discusses contemporary social issues and the UMC’s stance on them based
on the Book of Discipline, in a point/counter point format.

Adult Small Group Study
Meets
in Room 205, at 10:45 AM.
This group
is studying “Celebrating Life: Catching the Thieves that Steal your Joy,” a
book by Luci Swindoll.

20 Somethings
Meets
in Room 207, at 11:00 AM.
This group
is open to young adults between the ages of 18 and 30, and is studying “Blue
Like Jazz,” a book by Donald Miller.

Group Bible Studies
These
accountability groups meet at various times and places throughout the week.
Monday
Senior Promise Keepers
Meets
on Monday, twice a month, at Twin Lakes, at 10:00 AM.
This
men’s group is studying “The Last Lecture,” a book by Randy Pausch and
Jeffrey Zaslow.

Tuesday
Mom’s Bible Study
Meets
every Tuesday in Room 205, 9:30—11:00 AM.
Through
various Bible studies and discussion, this women’s group is learning to
become the mothers/women that God has created them to be.

Meets
every Tuesday in Room 209, at 9:40 AM.
This
women’s group is studying “The Amazing Collection,” a DVD series that goes
through the books of the Bible.

Men’s Emmaus
Meets
every Thursday in the Quiet Room, at 11:00 AM.
This
men’s prayer and share group meets to keep alive the spirit of the “Walk to
Emmaus” and offer Christian support.

Wednesday
Mom’s Bible Study
Meets
every Wednesday in the Prayer Room, 7:00—8:00 PM.
A
women/family/child-oriented Bible study and discussion group, this women’s
group is studying “Running Nowhere in Every Direction,” a book from NavPress.

Promise Keepers
Meets
every Wednesday in the Quiet Room, at 7:00 PM.
This
men’s group is committed to supporting and growing each other’s walk with
Christ.

Ladies Small Group
Meets
every Wednesday in the Library, at 7:00 PM.
This
group is discussing a Women of Faith study called “Managing Your Moods.”

Thursday
Becoming Mary
Meets
the first Thursday of the month, rotating in members’ homes, at 9:15 AM.
Focusing
on becoming more connected with Christ, this women’s group is studying
“Jesus on Parenting,” a book by Teresa Whitehurst.

Never Ending Lent Group
Meets
the first and third Thursday of the month, at the Hyde/Hart’s home,
7:00—9:00 PM.
This
mixed group shares fellowship and discusses topics of interest, including
ways to serve SUMC and the community. All are welcome.

Saturday
Saturday Morning Men’s Group
Meets
the first and third Saturday of the month, at Panera Bread on Union Centre,
8:00—9:30 AM.
This
men’s group shares fellowship over coffee, discussing and learning what it
means to be disciples of Christ, in applications for today.

United
Methodist Women Circles
United
Methodist Women (UMW) is a community of women whose purpose is to know God
and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a
creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through
participation in the global ministries of the church.
In
addition to spiritual formation, our UMW Circles at SUMC are involved in
fund raising for local and global ministries, through the spring and fall
Rummage Sale, as well as the annual Christmas Cookie Walk.
Hope Circle
Meets
the first Monday of the month in Room 209,
September—May, at 7:00 PM.
In
addition to the above ministries, this group is studying the book, “A Modern
Girl’s Guide to Bible Study.”

Mary Martha Circle
Meets
the second Tuesday of the month, rotating in members’ homes, at 6:00 PM.
In
addition to the above ministries, this group is studying Tony Snow’s “Last
Letter.”

Meets
the second Wednesday of the month in Room 209,
September—May, at 1:00 PM.
In
addition to the above ministries, this group is wrapping up the book, “Hymns
by Women: A Journey in Song,” and will pick a new study this fall.

The Treasure Principle

by Randy Alcorn, about a radical teaching of Jesus.
What’s Advent All About?

discussion of the importance of Advent in the life of the church and in the
life of believers, especially in regards to its two meanings.
Boot
Camp
Sundays at 9:30 AM.
October 5, 12, 19, 26 and Nov
2, 2008.
“Boot
Camp” is a series of five classes on the basics: Christian beliefs, church
history, United Methodist
history, SUMC organization, our
mission and service opportunities as a church to the world, and the
expectations of being a part of our church.
This course is designed for:

Those who are interested in
becoming members of SUMC;
-
Those who may be relatively
new to the faith and would like to go over the basics;
-
Those who might like a
refresher course on the basics;
-
Those who want to learn what
it means to be part of our church;
-
Those who want to connect with
any of the variety of service and mission projects here at SUMC.
Topics covered include―
Oct 5: basic Christian beliefs
and church history with Pastor Rick;
Oct 12: John Wesley and United
Methodist history with Pastor Rick;
Oct 19: SUMC organization with
Pastor Jim;
Oct 26: mission and service
opportunities with church leaders;
Nov 2: mission and service
opportunities with church leaders.
If you want to become a member
of SUMC, please attend all five weeks of this course. Then you may join the
church during our worship services on Sunday, November 9, 2008.
